Neighbourhood:

York town was founded in the late 1700’s and did not become Toronto until 1834. The town’s area extended from George to Berkeley Street and north of Front Street.  St. Lawrence as we know today was part of Lake Ontario and at that time was land filled to create more port land and industrial space. The neighbourhood’s central focus today is predominantly the shopping and retail hub known as the St. Lawrence market which was developed in the 1970’s and was largely funded by the city to turn the area around. This planning was carried out by Alan Littlewood and was largely influenced by Jane Jacobs.

The character of real estate in the neighbourhood is quite varied. A lot of the old industrial building have either been pulled down for new development or have been converted into hard lofts or commercial developments. One of the most interesting and striking buildings is the Flatiron building which was the first of its kind in North America architectural speaking.

Transportation:

From the retail / residential levels of Backstage’s Podium there is direct access to Toronto’s Underground PATH system. So you have underground access to Union Station, the Yonge-university Subway Line and the Go Train, all without even going outside.

Shopping and Restaurants:

Right around the corner is the famous St. Lawrence Market. Use Walkscore.com to explore the area as well, there are so many restaurants in the neighbourhood it’s hard to pin down a few, however I will mention one restaurant, which I frequent and love! Biff’s Bistro at Front and Yonge on the north side of Front, and yes, you can hit the restaurant with a stone from Backstage! Although I’m not condoning you test the theory.

Price Ranges:

CONDOMINIUMS prices start at about $600/ Square Foot. I will have more details soon as they are released. Check back shortly.
